The Right to An Education

Dear Editor,

It’s disturbing how easily the abstinence-only sex education bill passed Utah legislature. Are they all too naive to realize that when you stop teaching children about safe sex that teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases won’t decrease? The argument from the republican party persists to be that matters of sexual intercourse should be taught in the home. I would have to agree with this argument. The fact is not all children have that privilege and it is juvenile to assume otherwise. Teens, even preteens and children, are being exposed to explicit sexual images from countless forms of media, distorting their views. If they don’t have parents who will clear up false concepts, or clear it up soon enough where will they learn correctly?Schools can offer professional sexual education and still teach abstinence as the best way until marriage. Because, teens are exposed to drugs and sex so profusely they are faced with serious decisions at increasingly younger ages. Although parents should be teaching their children about contraceptives some students would feel more comfortable learning sensitive subjects from trained professionals. For some parents a sex education class has helped facilitate conversations that should happen but for some reason have been delayed. And even when parents teach their teens they often don’t do it soon enough. Adolescents obtain wrong ideas at a young age and never ask otherwise. Unfortunate others will never be taught by parents. Parents and Utah legislation should realize if someone doesn’t teach our students about sex and contraceptives they will never learn correctly leading them to make the biggest mistake of all.
